Scallywags Babies

Breeding the ethical way

Here at Scallywags we breed our own small animals. As mentioned on our rehoming pages we no longer breed rabbits as there are so many unwanted rabbits in the world. We do however breed some small animals that I am proud to say are absolutely scrumptious!!

Scallywags Babies & The Waiting List

Here at Scallywags we do things a little differently to other pet shops. You cannot just walk in to buy a baby, oh no that would be far too easy lol. Anyone would think we were a shop!!!!

For most of the year we run a waiting list system. We cannot breed enough babies to keep up with the demand, and we are ok with that. We never force any of our animals to breed, so if they are not in the mood then there is no breeding. WE NEVER FORCE OUR ANIMALS TO BREED. If you would like to join our waiting list please email the shop scallywagspetshop@hotmail.co.uk for the terms and conditions. We take a £10 deposit payment per animal to go on the list. Please call the shop on 02087773440 if you wish to join the list.

Not only do we not force our animals to breed, we don't own enough mummies and daddies in order to keep up with the demand, and we are ok with that too. Each and every one of our animals has a name, not a number, they have their own personality's, likes and dislikes, They are little people and they are treated as such. If I had loads more hamsters I would have more chance of meeting the demand, but I would not be able to give them the one on one care, attention and love. I would also not be able to give them the cages that are appropriate for them. My hamsters live in 100cm long cages and have tons of enrichment and toys, and that is how it should be. In rodent farms they live in 20cm laboratory cages, with nothing and I do mean NOTHING. Its truly heart breaking to see. I only breed any mummy animal a maximum of three times, I am happy that having three litters does not effect their life expectancy. I will not compromise on their lives and the care I give them.

Are we perfect?

Heck no!!

But every day we strive to be better.

To do things in the very best way.

Only that way can we be proud of what we do, and we are proud.

Because of how we breed our animals we will not be able to give you a time scale for when you will reach the top of the list. Most pet shops buy their animals in from animal production factories/mills. By doing that they keep their costs low and can order any animals they need and these are delivered to them within a couple of days. This means they are able to give you very specific waiting times or will have animals available for you to pop in and buy straight away. We are NOT most pet shops, we would rather no longer sell animals if all we could do is order our animals in from a rodent mill or farm. Animals are little lives, THEY ARE NOT STOCK!!!!!! They are far too important to be treated as such.

COMING SOON. We will have a page explaining how we rear our babies. This another way that makes us VERY VERY different. I cannot

wait to share that with you.

Once you reach the top of the waiting list we will be in contact with you. We will give you all of the colours and coat lengths available for you to choose from. You do not need to worry about whether your new baby will be friendly. We work really hard with all of our babies to make sure they are very very friendly and tame. Once you have decided we will book you a collection appointment that suits you. At this appointment you will have a member of staff that is there totally for you, for a minimum of 30 minutes but as long as you need. We find this to be the best possible service we can give to our customers and the least stressful process for our babies. We do know that people may wish to meet an entire litter, handle them all and then choose which baby they would like. We do understand that is one way of doing things, but it's not our way. We use the hamster playground to teach people how to look after and handle their new pet. This is a safe space that the babies are used to visiting and where customers can grow in confidence with their new pet.

Imagine there being 10 babies in a litter, and we have 10 customers wanting them. Every time a new family comes in the whole litter need to be woken up for a complete stranger to handle, stroke, pick up, and generally disturb. If you are the first baby to be chosen that is fine for you. Imagine being baby number 10, that baby has been woken up 10 times and handled by strangers. That is so utterly stressful for that baby and all of the other babies that are not baby number 1. We are not willing to put our babies in that situation, many years ago we did do things the old fashioned way. But we never will again. We have seen for many years now that our babies are so much happier, and stress free. This makes the transition to their new home to be the best possible one for the baby and the new family. We will not change our policy so please do not ask us.

We know this is an odd way of doing things, but we have such great results and such happy customers and baby animals, we are happy being odd!!!

Please do get in touch if you have questions we are more than welcome to answer them all.
